Visual Exploration of Indian General Election Results
World's biggest electoral exercise took place in India ๐ฎ๐ณ in 2019. About 900 000 000 ๐ฎ (more than the combined population of the United States ๐บ๐ธ and the European Union ๐ช๐บ) people were elligible to vote to elect their representatives in the Lok Sabha ๐๏ธ (India's Lower House). The marathon election took place in 6 weeks ๐
(between April 11th and May 19th) in 7 phases in around 1 million๐ฎ polling stations (900 voters on average per polling station). The voter turn out was around 67.1%โ โ highest ever ๐ (over 600 000 000 people voted).
In 2019; 8 049 candidates โ 7 320 men (90.94%), 723 women (8.98%), and 6 third gender (0.075%) โ contested the elections for 543 seats (on average 15 contestants per seat) in Lok Sabha ๐๏ธ. These candidates represented 677 political parties.
The results were announced on 23rd March 2019; incumbent prime minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party ๐ won an absolute majority for the second time crushing all the other competition winning 303 out of 543 seats (around 6 times the largest opposition party Rahul Gandhi's Indian National Congress which won only 52 seats).
Some key highlights about elections in 2019:
- Polls were cancelled in Vellore, Tamil Nadu after Rs. 11.48 crores were seized.
- BJP won all the seats in 8 (out of 36) states and union territories (Arunachal Pradesh(2), Gujarat(26), Haryana(10), Himachal Pradesh(4), NCT of Delhi(7), Rajasthan(25), Tripura(2), Uttarakhand(5)).
- INC was not able to win a any seats in 17 (out of 36) states and union territories.
- Since no opposition party was not able to win 10% (54) seats in the election; India remains without an official opposition party.
- In a country where median wealth per adult in 2018 is less that Rs. 90 000 (~1300 USD) according to Credit Suisse's Global Wealth Databook; 87.48% (475 out of 542) MPs are crorepati (total assets > Rs. 1 00 00 000 (~ 143 500 USD) in 2019 as compared to 81.95% (445 MPs) in 2014. The median total asset of the MPs is Rs. 4 84 77 451 (~ 695 500 USD). Nakul Kamal Nath (MP from Chindwara, Madhya Pradesh) is the MP with highest total assets with Rs. 660 19 46 757 (~ 95 million USD) and Goddeti Madhavi (MP from Araku, Andhra Pradesh) with least total assets with Rs. 1 41 179 (~ 2000 USD).
- 233 MPs out of 542 (42.91%) have a criminal case file against them as compared to 186 (34.25%) in 2014. Out of which 159 MPs (up from 119 MPs last election) have serious criminal cases file against them, 34 (up from 23 MPs last election) have cases related to murder or attempt to murder, 24 (up from 16 MPs last election) have cases related to causing communal disharmony and 18 (up from 2 MPs last election) have cases related to crimes against women
